This was a busy weekend for me, playing Santa for friends and family in preparation for Christmas.
I was able to get some sports and movie watching in and that is always rewarding; unfortunately for Friday’s events, the United Center teams failed to wow anybody. While at home that night, the Blackhawks set a new low water mark in home losses by surpassing all of last years home losses in 2 and a half months of play. The Blackhawks went ahead 3-2 in the first period of last night’s game against the Calgary Flames and were able to stay ahead. An empty netter made the final score 4-2 in favor of the ‘Hawks. The Bulls lost big against the Celtics Friday night, but were able to bounce back and Derrick Rose put the team on his back and said, “Get out ‘the way!” to tie the game to send it into overtime and then won it for the Bulls.
The Bears came back and won against the Lions, sweeping the season’s series, with 4 weeks left in the season, the Bears are looking better than what I had them pegged for at the beginning of the season.
Media wise, I got to see two movies: “Megamind” and “Paranormal Activity”. While contrarian, I’ve grown weary of the standard Pixar formula and sequels won’t be getting my money anytime soon *cough* “Shrek” *cough*. “Megamind” is a superb movie in every aspect. Some may consider it Dreamworks’ tardy answer to “The Incredibles” but the movie is fresh, funny and wholly original. Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and David Cross were phenomenal voice actors and had me in stitches the entire time. The story is original while combining numerous archetypes to weave a comedic masterpiece. The soundtrack fit perfectly and it’s a shame this movie hasn’t gotten more attention. This was the best animated movie I’ve seen since “Wall-e” though I hope it doesn’t get the sequel treatment like “Shrek”. “Megamind” comes easily in my top 5 of movies this year.
The other movie I had been meaning to see and I’d to thank Netflix for scaring me stupid last night by sending me “Paranormal Activity”. As I’ve said before, I’m not much of a horror buff. I can take violence horror but the paranormal with ghosts, demons, or possession horrors freak me the F out. I like the style of the movie but pacing is everything. Sometimes the contact by the demon was too little and the douchebag boyfriend had far too much California-fratboy-doucheyness for my liking. There are a lot of creepy moments in the movie and their spacing really gets under your skin. I won’t spoil the movie but the payoff wasn’t all that great in the end. Sound was so important in the movie and if I had seen this movie in theatres, you’d probably see me catatonic with an embarrassing puddle beneath my seat. The alternate ending would have destroyed the sequel but it was none the less eerie.
In my gaming life, I’ve been able to do some of the ground work in building my battle-ready Pokémon team. I’ve always been a fan of the series and am excited to start participating in some Pokémon communities and having a team ready to battle for any challenge.
